What's this blog about?

I teach several courses under the broad topic of "Multicultural Education," prioritizing social justice issues of access, power/privilege, & narrowing the academic achievement gap. I am a person of color and I almost always have a white co-teacher. We include topics, such as: racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, ethnocentrism, deculturalization, transforming curriculum, etc. This is a place where I post information that we teach; lesson plans for activities; and resources we use and/or which are shared with me by my adult students.

Microaggressions in the Classroom: Manifestation, Dynamics and Impact

Micro-Aggressions:  Day to day interactions with people which often appear to be a complement, but contain a meta communication or a hidden insult to the target groups.  People who engage in micro-aggressions see themselves as "good people."  Micro-Aggressions can be verbal or nonverbal.  The are unconscious manifestations of a world view, inclusion/exclusion, and superiority/inferiority.

What can we do?
  • Learn from conscious vigilance of our own biases and fears
  • Learn about and interact with people of different background
  • Don't be defensive
  • Be open to discussion your own attitudes and how they hurt others
  • Be an ally: stand personally against all biases

Derald Wing Sue talks about classroom experience.

And personal testimonies from young adults.
