I teach several courses under the broad topic of "Multicultural Education," prioritizing social justice issues of access, power/privilege, & narrowing the academic achievement gap. I am a person of color and I almost always have a white co-teacher. Three high school students in a North Dakota school put on Ku Klux Klan-style white robes and hoods during a Friday night state hockey game. The move has sparked outrage nation-wide, and some are wondering what the teens were thinking.

Red River High School principal, Kristopher Arason, said that just after Red River’s first goal the students put on the gear. He said they wore it for about 30 seconds to 1 minute and they removed the offensive items after complaints by fellow students. At least they got the message pretty quick.

“We, as a school, are extremely disappointed with the behavior of these three students,” Arason said in a statement. “This behavior is not a representation of our school or student body.”
