What's this blog about?

I teach several courses under the broad topic of "Multicultural Education," prioritizing social justice issues of access, power/privilege, & narrowing the academic achievement gap. I am a person of color and I almost always have a white co-teacher. We include topics, such as: racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, ethnocentrism, deculturalization, transforming curriculum, etc. This is a place where I post information that we teach; lesson plans for activities; and resources we use and/or which are shared with me by my adult students.

Vygotsky's Social Cultural Theory

Vygotsky's theory includes three parts:
SI - Social Interaction
MKO - More Knowledgeable Other
ZPD - Zone of Proximal Development

Zone of Proximal Growth - the "zone" of learning is between independence and potential level of comprehension given guidance and/or instruction.  This "expertise" is developed through a series of social interactions and teaching moments, which leads to higher learning.  Cognitive development occurs between what you can do without help and what you can do with help.

Who is Lev Vygotsky?  Social learning precedes cognition (in contrast to Piaget).  Change in thinking occurs "from the outside in" as kids observe, interact, and internalize.

Who is Bandura?  A psychologist who first spoke about the importance of social learning.
