What's this blog about?

I teach several courses under the broad topic of "Multicultural Education," prioritizing social justice issues of access, power/privilege, & narrowing the academic achievement gap. I am a person of color and I almost always have a white co-teacher. We include topics, such as: racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, ethnocentrism, deculturalization, transforming curriculum, etc. This is a place where I post information that we teach; lesson plans for activities; and resources we use and/or which are shared with me by my adult students.

Interesting Ad Campaign

"If you laugh, you get it.  If you are offended, you're part of the problem"

"Time to open up the can of 'I'm not a racist, but…"
"Well-meaning people sometimes make off-handed remarks to each other and to people of color that are hurtful and offensive. Calling out friends and acquaintances on remarks like those in this clip is beyond frustrating because no one ever wants to admit the nuances of racism. Thank the heavens for comedians."

Disney Expanded - What Can Disney Teach Us?

Why do you think projects like these are politically and socially important?
It's important to challenge stereotypes. The images of normalcy and beauty that the media portrays are very limited, as well and the ideals of gender and sexuality. In order to create acceptance, we need to start with our media. Why not start with more diverse character designs? "Ideal human traits" should apply to everyone, not just a limited few.

Why hide behind a man?

Sweatshops

Women's work" THEN (garment factories)…

And NOW (Rana Plaza, Bangladesh)…

QUESTIONS:
  • What is "fair trade"?
  • What laws were put into place to protect workers after Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire?
  • Where are factories located now (there are NONE in the U.S.)?
  • How much were people paid (or not paid) in the past and now?
  • What is made at the Bangladesh factory (Gap jeans was a major company)?
  • Which companies were involved in Bangladesh (Walmart wouldn't increase pay to 35 cents!)?
  • What can YOU do?

U.S.A. Protests Force a Change in France

but not in the U.S.A.

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/social_issues-july-dec13-sexualization_12-21/
Social psychologist Sarah Murnen has studied the hypersexualization of women in media for more than 25 years. The research that she and her colleagues at Kenyon College conducted over the last several years found a steep increase in the pervasiveness of images in magazines that show young women in highly sexual ways. The American Psychological Association defines hypersexualization as “occurring when a person’s value comes only from his or her sexual appeal or behavior to the exclusion of other characteristics.”

In a 2008 study of 1,988 advertisements from 50 well known American magazines, researchers from Wesleyan University found that half of them show women as sex objects. A woman was considered a sex object depending on her posture, facial expression, make-up, activity, camera angle and amount of skin shown.

“Sexuality is very much a social construction and, thus, a product of a particular socio-cultural environment,” said Hatton. “What we deem to be appropriate to “wear on the street” is likely not the same in other countries, including those in which women are expected to be fully covered and those in which women are not.”

Self-Image, Costume, and Family Tapistry Activities

Beauty is Skin Deep:  http://www.tolerance.org/activity/beauty-skin-deep Students reflect on the ways in which they have experienced or participated in bias based on physical size and appearance, and the ways in which expectations about body image and appearance in our society affect us. They learn about media literacy and examine media images for "attractiveness messages" that consciously and unconsciously impact our attitudes and behavior toward others. Students conclude the lesson by exploring ways to get beyond appearance as a dominant force in their social lives.

Costumes: http://www.tolerance.org/search/apachesolr_search/Racial%20representation%20on%20TV

Understanding Prejudice Through Self-Portraits: http://www.tolerance.org/search/apachesolr_search/Understanding%20Prejudice%20through%20paper%20plates%20portrait

Memories:  http://www.tolerance.org/activity/memories-can-have-are  To begin the lesson, I ask the students what a memory is. We start a Can-Have-Are chart for memories. For example, memories can make you happy, have a special feeling and are different for everyone. After a short discussion, I present each item from my bag and tell about the memory it holds for me. I then introduce the book and read it aloud.

Family Tapestries: http://www.tolerance.org/activity/family-tapestry  The overall goal of these lessons is to help students recognize and accept differences among each other and within the larger community and how their own unique family contributes to a richer society. As they begin to understand themselves more thoroughly, learning opportunities likely will open up to explore their own biases and prejudices. The series consists of the following four lessons.

Look What Companies Support Gay Rights!

Yes, please boycott Oreo for their support of Gay Rights. While you’re at it, please also throw away your iPod, iPhone, and iPad since Apple supports as well. Hopefully you have lots of clothes, because you’ll need to ditch your Levi’s and Nike’s too. Perhaps you bought them at ... JC Penney’s or Sears? You’ll have to take them back. Flying somewhere soon? Better not be on American, Delta, Southwest, or United…you’ll need a new ticket. Airline wasn’t mentioned? Just be sure your jet isn’t Boeing made. Don’t sleep at Marriott or Hilton (or any of their family brands) because you might catch the gay rights they support. That morning coffee from Starbucks will have to go as well, go ahead replace it with a McCafe…oh wait, McDonald’s supports gay rights too. Hmm, do you clean with Tide, Gain, or Bounty? Use Duracell batteries, shave with Gillette, or use Fixodent? Brush with Crest, use Pantene, Scope, Tampax, Venus, or Old Spice products? Those are all gone too. Proctor & Gamble supports Gay rights. Darn, you’re using Internet Explorer or Chrome to see Facebook and read this status? Download something else, Microsoft and Google show their Pride as well. Ah, but your drinks are safe. Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Budweiser are on your side … if your side is on the right side of history since all three also support Gay Rights. Hopefully, you or your lawyer will never need in-depth research. Both LexisNexis and West-law, who together control the market, support Gay Rights. Drive that big, manly, Ford F350? It’s a "Friend of Dorothy" too, as it’s company Ford and General Motors also support the rights of all. So, do us all a favor, don’t take it all out on a festive cookie … just stay home and boycott everything.

Social Activism

Young Adult Social Activists:  http://www.visualnews.com/2012/03/26/young-adults-the-future-of-social-activism/?utm_source=VisualNews&utm_campaign=ba8e3ce5c5-RSS_EMAIL&utm_medium=email

* 7 in 10 American young adults are social activists.
* 1 in 2 donate time to support the causes he or she cares about.
* 1 in 3 boycotts or supports a business based on the causes he or she cares about.
* 1 in 5 participates in a rally or meeting, or contacts their local representative.
* 3 in 5 are female, and 3 of 5 of all activists are educated and working.

It can also be said that this group are activist consumers. They’re more likely to purchase from a company that supports a cause they care about (if price and quality were equal), and they want companies to take action. They believe corporations should create economic value for society by addressing its needs. If a corporation is able to take the wants of this group to heart, not only will they think more highly of a company that supports a social cause, but they would also be more apt to seek employment with a company that does so.

Challenging Media - The Disney Influence

The video summarizes and offers some example the corporate (national & international) power which Disney has to influence the media, children, and society. Unprecedented control over images and messages leads to a limited world view.  As you view these videos/songs, ask yourself these questions:
  • What stereotypes are portrayed?
  • Do those stereotypes still exist?
  • In your teaching/learning, what have you taught/learned that dismantled the stereotypes?
This video gives a specific example of the "Disney racism" towards African Americans.  These are "Jim Crows" and even have an African American accent.

This video gives a specific example of the "Disney racism" towards Middle Eastern Communities.

This video gives a specific example of the "Disney racism" towards Asians.

This video gives a specific example of the "Disney racism" towards Native Americans.

And here is a 20 minutes excerpt from the 60 minutes program, Mickey Mouse Monopoly.
