Well known for his eye-opening book Material World: A Global Family Portrait where he asked an average family in 30 locations to empty out their homes to show their possessions, Peter Menzel came up with another brilliant book idea. Teaming up with his wife Faith D’Aluisio, the duo got to spend time with 30 families around the world and analyze their weekly groceries for Hungry Planet: What the World Eats in a Week. In the book they describe the weekly food purchases and costs, showing photographs of the family at home, at the market, in their community, and these portraits of the entire family surrounded by a week’s worth of groceries.

Even without the text, the family portraits are eye opening. It seems the people living in poverty eat more nutrient dense whole foods than the people who could easily afford fresh produce. The first world families have more processed foods and soda and less fruits and vegetables than all of the others. It’s an interesting correlation that people in more developed countries also have more diseases of affluence, such as cancer, diabetes, depression, and heart disease. Photojournalist husband and wife duo Peter Menzel and Faith D’Alusion have come up with yet another poignant theme for their latest book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.
They spent 3 years visiting 30 countries, asking 80 people from all
walks of life to share with them the visual answer to the simple
question, “What do you typically eat in 1 day?” The portraits themselves
are compelling and very telling of the way culture and occupation shape
a person’s diet, and thus health. Along with each photograph is a list
that details all of the items along with the total calorie count.
